This Msc track in Physics provides our graduates with a coherent and modern education aimed at excellence in knowledge and research on a wide range of fundamental, methodological and technological aspects in the area of Condensed Matter Physics, including fundamental properties of solids and liquids, as well as in the area of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. This highly regarded track will allow the students to get a complete overview of the field and work at the forefront of research, paving a solid way either to become a future physics pioneer or to compete for a future job requiring problem solving abilities.

1) What is “Condensed Matter and Nanoscience”? The impact of study and research in this field is huge both in basic science and in the applications widely used in our society, including electronics, new materials and devices. Many Nobel laureates in Physics worked in the field, starting from the beginning to the last years: 2009, invention of the CCD sensors using semiconductors; 2010, discovery of the 2D material graphene; 2014, invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light source; 2016, discovery of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter; 2021, discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems including condensed matter.

2) At Unicam have a longstanding experience and activity in this field, both for experimental and theoretical physics. The activity in solid state and surface physics started more than 50 years ago and was the starting point for the establishment of a specific bachelor and master degree in Physics in our University. Several research groups are active in our University, dealing with hot topics as superconductivity, surface and low-dimensional materials, matter under extreme conditions, advanced characterization methods using synchrotron radiation. The physics school at our University is highly regarded and many former students had brilliant careers in national and international institutions.

3) Our offer of modules is conceived to provide the students with the necessary tools for deepen their understanding and knowledge of the more advanced topics in condensed matter. Theoretical and computational abilities will be strengthened by the “Condensed Matter Theory” and “Statistical Mechanics” modules, with the possible addition of “Quantum Field Theory” and “Quantum Optics” courses. New frontiers in nanotechnology will be explored in the module “Physical of Nanotechnology”, complemented possibly by free choice activities like “Synthesis of functional materials”. Experimental and data-analysis skills will be increased by specific modules “Advanced Spectroscopy” and “Experimental nanoscience”, possibly adding also courses like “Surface and chemical physics” or more.

4) Prospected students will have large possibilities for their master thesis work in our research groups, including theoretical, computational, data-analysis and experimental activities. The activity for the master thesis can be carried out fully within our institutions, but can also take advantage of our vast national and international collaborations including also international institutions and important research facilities (free-electron-laser, synchrotron and neutron radiation sources). Master students will be prepared to the next step in their career, being both a PhD grant for continuing research activities or other job possibilities in Italy or elsewhere.
